AirPods Pro 3 review: Apple’s best earbuds are built for iPhone

AirPods Pro 3 don’t need to win Android users to be successful. They need to make sense for the enormous number of people already carrying an iPhone, and that remains Apple’s easiest contest.

The third-generation model improves the parts you notice every day: fit, noise cancellation and battery life. Apple has also added heart-rate sensing and Live Translation, giving them a clearer place in the AI-wearables conversation without pretending the earbuds can operate independently from the phone.

A new fit that won’t suit everybody

Apple has changed the shape and now includes five silicone-tip sizes, from XXS to L. Independent reviewers generally found the result more secure, particularly during exercise, although the deeper fit felt less natural to some people who were comfortable with AirPods Pro 2.

That is worth taking seriously. A better seal improves bass and noise cancellation, but comfort is personal. If possible, buy from a retailer with sensible returns and spend time trying the supplied tips rather than assuming the factory-fitted pair is correct.

The earbuds and case are rated IP57. That is a meaningful improvement for sweat, dust and accidental splashes, but they are not designed for swimming.

AirPods Pro 3 feel less like a dramatic reinvention and more like Apple removing the small reasons people might choose something else.

The noise cancellation is the headline upgrade

Apple claims up to twice the active noise cancellation of AirPods Pro 2 and four times that of the original AirPods Pro. Those are manufacturer comparisons, but independent testing strongly supports the broader point: the third generation is exceptionally good at reducing low-frequency travel noise and the less predictable sounds of offices and streets.

Transparency mode remains one of Apple’s strengths. Voices and surrounding sound come through naturally enough that the earbuds can stay in during a short conversation. That sounds minor until you use earbuds for several hours and realise how often removing them becomes an irritation.

Sound is fuller, even if Apple still limits control

The rebuilt acoustic system produces a fuller, more energetic sound than the previous generation. Reviewers heard stronger bass, better separation and a wider presentation, while Spatial Audio remains available for supported content.

Apple still doesn’t provide a conventional manual equaliser for AirPods. Adaptive EQ works in the background, and personalised audio options can change the balance, but listeners who want to create and save detailed sound profiles will find rivals more flexible.

Live Translation is useful, with conditions

Live Translation can play translated speech through the earbuds while a connected iPhone handles the processing. It supports selected languages and regions, including UK English and Spanish, but it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later.

Independent reviewers found it useful enough to change a conversation, but not polished enough to replace a human interpreter. There can be a delay, setup isn’t always obvious and the other person may still need to read or hear the iPhone’s response. It works best as assistance for an ordinary exchange, not something to trust with a medical, legal or urgent conversation.

That limitation doesn’t make the feature pointless. Translation is exactly the kind of task where earbuds can help without demanding attention from a screen. It simply remains dependent on the phone, software and language support around them.

Heart-rate sensing makes them more than headphones

AirPods Pro 3 can measure heart rate during workouts and feed the data into Apple’s Fitness system. Apple says more than 50 workout types are supported. This will not replace every sports watch, but it can give somebody who already exercises with earbuds one less reason to wear another device.

The hearing-health tools are more consequential. Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection features are available only where the relevant approvals and software support exist, so UK buyers should check Apple’s current availability page rather than assume every advertised function is active.

Battery finally covers a normal working day

Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours of listening with active noise cancellation, or up to 10 hours in Transparency mode when using the Hearing Aid feature. The case takes ordinary listening time to up to 24 hours.

Eight hours isn’t class-leading, but it’s enough to remove much of the mid-day charging anxiety attached to earlier AirPods Pro. The case supports USB-C, MagSafe, Apple Watch chargers and Qi-certified charging. Apple doesn’t include a USB-C cable or power adapter.

The best experience still requires Apple devices

AirPods Pro 3 will play ordinary Bluetooth audio from an Android phone or Windows computer. That doesn’t mean the experience is equal. Automatic device switching, detailed settings, Find My, personalised Spatial Audio, hearing tools, Live Translation and several Siri functions sit inside Apple’s ecosystem.

Who should buy AirPods Pro 3?

AIWearHQ verdict: the obvious choice for most iPhone owners

AirPods Pro 3 are not the most flexible earbuds and they make considerably less sense away from Apple devices. Within the iPhone ecosystem, though, the overall package is difficult to beat.

The better fit, excellent noise cancellation, natural transparency mode and longer battery are improvements you will notice before opening a settings menu. Heart-rate sensing and Live Translation add genuine use rather than a layer of AI decoration, even though both rely heavily on Apple’s wider system.

Recommended for: iPhone owners who want premium earbuds for travel, calls, exercise and everyday listening. AirPods Pro 2 owners should compare the fit and new features before upgrading, but anybody replacing older AirPods has a strong reason to choose the latest model.
